Razavi Hospital has planned to open a medical clinic specialized in treating cleft lip and palate in the near future.
Announcing the above, Dr. Reza Saeedi the managing director of the hospital said: "Cleft lip and palate is a congenital disorder that may appear as cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP) or cleft lip and palate (CLP). This appears in every 700 or 1000 births."
He added: "From an annual 1.5 million births in Iran, around 15,000 are born with this disorder. The figure is large and the infants born with cleft lip or palate or both and their families suffer various problems such as psychological and mental distress, infectious diseases, slow growth, …"
According to him, the disorder may range from a hard-to-distinguish cleavage to deep opening on the two sides. "It may also result in a syndrome-based diseases to affect the patient in addition to many associated problems."
On the cause of the deformity, Saeedi said taking certain drugs during pregnancy may be a key factor in appearance of CL, CP or CLP, "although in many cases no genetic factor is involved."
Elsewhere, he referred to the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate, saying "Treatment must be carried out by craniofacial teams to help the patient get rid of various associated problems such as difficulty in growth, speaking, facial beauty, chronic respiratory infections, psychological problems and the like, and return to normal life."
"The decision to establish the cleft lip and palate clinic at Razavi Hospital was made in a session with the pediatric surgeons," he stated.
There are similar clinics already in service in capital Tehran and Isfahan. Cleft lip and palate treatment has been practiced across the world for the past 70 years.
